Interview with Karen MacDonald, Maine 2014 Teacher of the Year
YOU JUST RETIRED FROM BEING A SIXTH- AND SEVENTH-GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS TEACHER AT KING MIDDLE SCHOOL. WHAT WERE YOUR FIRST YEARS OF TEACHING LIKE?
My student teaching was in a third-grade class and those third-graders ate me alive! I just didn’t have the classroom management piece down. I’m grateful the advising teacher saw some potential in me.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN THAT HELPED YOU GROW?
One thing that I figured out in my second year was to make the learning real. That’s what happens at King Middle School. So when the conversation began about implementing expeditionary learning it felt normal to me because that’s what I had done in the gifted-and-talented program at King. Now it’s about doing hands-on
projects that involve engaging with community members.
